A brief glimpse of a few members of the I Will Evolve team.
Rebecca Van Damm is a senior in Anthropology and a student
of the Environmental Ethics Certificate Program at the University of Georgia.
She enjoys college radio debauchery (specifically that of WUOG 90.5FM in
Athens), shaking her assets, rocking the karaoke scene, eating, traveling,
traveling, and traveling. Rebecca is also enormously fond of guffawing
loudly in quiet places. Watch out, funny people! Her right eye crosses
in if you make her laugh too hard. e-mail: hexofbex@yahoo.com
Stephanie Powell is double majoring in
Political Science and Anthropology at the University of Georgia. She is
extremely dedicated to environmental activism having served as the head
of Students for Environmental Awareness (SEA) at UGA and teaching art and
environmental appreciation at the Boys and Girls Club in Athens, GA. Stephanie
enjoys traveling to far off lands, listening to African music, giving hugs
to people as well as trees, and eating granola. e-mail: ecochic@uga.edu
Natalie Foster is a regional representative
for the Appalachian Region providing tour organizing with the Atlantic
Coast EcoRegion (ACE) volunteers. Natalie and the tour staffers are based
in the Atlanta field office. She has been with the Sierra Club for almost
two years. If she isn't out working for social change-you can find her
in her garden, on her bike or listening to good, live music. e-mail: Natalie.foster@sierraclub.org
Jill Miller is the Sierra Club's Conservation
Organizer for the Global Warming & Energy Program in St. Louis, Missouri.
For the Route 66 tour, Jill drove 1,100 miles, organizing eight events
and media stops from St. Louie to Albuquerque, where she was so tired,
she promptly went hiking in Santa Fe National Forest. Jill has been with
the Club for more than 5 years—2 as an organizer, 3 as a volunteer leader. jill.miller@sierraclub.org.
Colleen Sarna is a conservation organizer
with the Global Warming and Energy Program in Illinois. Who knew a sixth
grade interest in recycling would be her gateway drug to a lifetime of
environmental activism? When not touring the country in a hybrid car, she
tries to avoid all that nature has to offer by spending time in movie theaters.
An avid sportsman, Brendan Bell spends
most of his time on safari. In between excursions, Brendan works for the
Sierra Club's Global Warming program. When he is in the office, he divides
his time amongst three principle endeavors: planning his next safari, talking
about past safaris, and lamenting the downfall of the ‘big game’ hunt.
Prior to joining the Sierra Club, Brendan was involved with the Royal Society
of Tiger Hunters, the London Men’s Council and worked briefly as an actor
impersonating Ernest Hemingway. Brendan's email is brendan.bell@sierraclub.org
My
name is Ilana Meallem, It is a Hebrew/Arabic name which
directly translated into English means "tree teacher". I was born into
a traditional Jewish family, and lived in London till the age of 17 after
which I immigrated independently to Israel. I went on to study Environmental
Science and Biology at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Before, during
and after my degree, I would take every opportunity to travel; this bug
took me to Central and South America, Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe and
Scandinavia. The more I traveled, the more at awe I was by the world’s
natural and cultural diversity yet I was also aware to the problems and
issues such places often face. This last year I have returned to Israel
to study in an Environmental Studies graduate program at the Arava Institute
in the south of Israel. This is a special international program that brings
students from the US, Canada, Jordan Israel and Palestine together to live
and study about the environment. My research focuses on the Arab Bedouin
communities of the Negev Desert in Israel and the environmental justice
issues that they face.
Mohammad A. Taher is a Jordanian Graduate
student at the Arava Institute for environmental studies, with a focus
on sustainable agriculture. Mohammad loves travelling, making new friends,
football (soccer), hiking, mountains climbing, music, and enjoying tasty
food! This summer, he is interning with the Sierra Club and wishes it could
last forever. Mohammad's email is hyper2022@yahoo.com
Matt Astleford is a Global Warming and
Energy Field Organizer in Sioux Falls, SD. Matt was looking forward to
the trip, because after trying to convince South Dakota's farmers and ranchers
to purchase hybrids the last two years, he figured that the movie stars
and Vegas showgirls would be an easy sell. The highlight of his trip was
doing a live radio interview from a downtown east Los Angeles Burger King.
When Matt isn't on a cross country hybrid tour, you can find him cheering
on the Minnesota Twins, road biking, and keeping it real.
Pete Connolly is a Program Assistant with
the Global Warming and Energy Team in Washington, DC, so he jumped at the
chance to leave the city for a few days and drive across the desert. However,
after seeing the dusty wonder that is Phoenix, losing big at blackjack
in Vegas, and driving through L.A. traffic, he'll never leave his apartment
ever, ever again. While in DC, Pete spends his time commenting on violations
of the national electrical code, baking, and fretting about the future
of mankind and planet Earth, but not necessarily in that order. And if
anyone in L.A. finds a pair of Home Depot sunglasses, please send them
to Pete at the DC office.
