The Function of PV Solar Panels

PV solar panels or photovoltaic solar panels are specially designed arrays of solar cells that are capable of directly converting solar radiation into electricity. The sun’s rays when transmitted to these PV solar panels, automatically gets converted into electrical power. As a result, homes, organizations or appliances that utilize sunlight for generating solar power, have solar panels installed in them. The renewable energy source obtained from the sun is one of the best ways of generating power. However, this radiated energy cannot be directly obtained from the sun. It needs to be converted through proper channels for utilizing it.

Expansion of Solar Power Grows Everyday

PV solar panels are extremely useful devices for electricity generation in remote areas. These can be used for lighting homes and offices as well as for recharging batteries for running cars or other appliances. But these need to be protected from the environment and are therefore packaged within glass sheets that protect the panels from damage. Semiconductors mainly constituting of silicon are used for the photovoltaic panels. These are very effective in absorbing the sun’s radiation and storing it for further usage.

Simply put the function of PV solar panels is to convert radiated light and energy into electrical current. In order to fulfill this basic function, the semiconductor first takes in the light available from the sun. While a part of it is absorbed by it, the rest is transmitted to the electrons present within the panels. The electrons loosen up and become free flowing. This in turn results in the formation of electricity which is eventually transmitted through wires to be utilized for various purposes.

Simple Working of Solar Panels

The main ingredient utilized for making PV solar panels is silicon. With the growing popularity of renewable energy sources, the demand for PV solar panels is also on the rise. This is one of the fastest growing energy technologies at present, making it almost indispensable for generating solar energy. Although these panels are expensive to install, with its growing demand, the cost has been considerably reduced. Once installed these are almost maintenance free and provide users the flexibility of enjoying uninterrupted electricity flow over long periods of time.

PV solar panels can be installed on roofs or within the walls of a building. These act as primary or ancillary sources of electricity in places where they are installed. Subsequently panels can also be placed outside the building as well. It is also being largely used for industrial buildings where power consumption rates are quite high. Moreover these are also effective for running batteries used in cars and boats. Photovoltaic power plants are the biggest users of this technology and developed countries like Spain, Germany and America is largely utilizing this energy resource. Developing countries like India are also using PV solar panels for generating solar power.

The Advantages of Wind Energy

Wind energy being a free source of energy is available in abundance. But making use of this energy source involves harnessing it from places which have a steady wind blowing all the time. The fact that wind energy generation is pollution-free and wind power technology does not involve hazardous toxic gas emissions, makes the production process eco-friendly as well. Also, the use of wind power is increasing gradually as people are becoming aware of this renewable, inexhaustible source of energy that is cheaper than other energy resources and does not take millions of years to be formed, unlike fossil fuels.

The Turbines That Produce Energy

Here are certain facts that will help you to know more about the advantages of wind energy:

  • Wind turbines need lesser set up area to generate wind power, compared to other average power stations. Thus, the land used for wind energy generation may be used for agricultural or cattle grazing purposes as well.
  • Wind energy seems to provide solution to the problem of greenhouse effect and also to the rising prices of gas and petroleum used for energy production purposes.
  • It provides an additional energy source as the population is increasing and more and more people are making use of this cheap source of energy in their day to day lives.
  • Today, efficient use of new technologies has also increased the scope for utilization of wind energy that is harnessed in many places. It seems to be the only form of energy that can be connected to the remote areas where connectivity with the electrical line seems to be difficult.
  • In this phase of technology driven society, a steady and reliable supply of electricity is required by all the developed and developing nations of the world. And wind energy may soon be utilized for large scale energy production in most areas.
  • According to theorists, if human beings harness the maximum amount of wind power available to them, it will lead to ten times more energy production than that is actually used now. Thus, wind energy, is optimally used, it may lead all nations to be independent in terms of energy requirements.

Mechanism of Producing Wind Energy

Though, wind energy has been used for the past 5,500 years by mankind for sailing ships and boats, its use as a source of energy generation or power generation came to mind around 1st century A.D. With its cost of production lessened by eighty percent since the eighties, wind energy continues to be the probability of future, fulfilling the energy and power requirements of the next generations, as it can be used for approximately four more billion years!

Uses of Solar Energy

We know today that there are multiple uses of solar energy. We use the solar energy every day in many different ways.

solarpower

solarpower

When we hang laundry outside to dry in the sun, we are using the solar heat to do work, drying our clothes. Plants use the solar light to make food. Animals eat plants for food. And as we learned, decaying plants hundreds of millions of years ago produced the coal, oil and natural gas that we use today.

Very often there is confusion about the various methods used to harness solar energy. Energy from the sun can be categorized in two ways – one is in the form of heat (or thermal energy) and the other is in the form of light energy. Solar thermal technologies uses the solar heat energy to heat substances (such as water or air) for applications such as space heating, pool heating and water heating for homes and businesses. There are a variety of products on the market that uses solar thermal energy. Often the produces used for this application are called solar thermal collectors and can be mounted on the roof of a building or in some other sunny locations. The solar heat can also be used to produce electricity on a large utility scale by converting the solar energy into mechanical energy.

So, fossil fuels is actually solar energy stored millions and millions of years ago. Indirectly, the sun or other are responsible for all our energy. Even nuclear energy comes from a star because the uranium atomsused in nuclear energy were created in the fury of a nova – a star exploding.

Solar energy has a variety of uses. These include running a remote home, water heating, solar energycentres and efficient fuel. Solar cookers are an excellent way to indicate that we are using direct solar energy. Solar Lanterns used by us are indicative factors that we are using solar energy. Solar energy is consumed in the form of our using solar street lights. We have been using solar energy in the form of solar domestic lights.

By using solar power for water heating, we can have an almost zero cost swimming pool or hot water supply. Solar panels are installed on the roof and a duct is installed. A transfer fluis is run along the duct from the panels to water and the heat energy is exchanged between the two. So, instead of having high electric bills due to keeping our pool warm during the winter months or if it is cold all year around, we have ben trying solar powered heated systems.
